As expected, you can't add a VS 2005 reference to a VS 2003 project in the IDE; you'll get a message box indicating the assembly could not be added since it isn't a valid assembly or COM component. If you try to add it manually in the project file and then build, you'll get a compiler error that "Version 2.0 is not a compatible version" for the added assembly.

I'm not aware of any special way to circumvent this. ILMerge won't work since merging 1.1 files (to produce a 1.1 assembly) will fail if you include a 2.0 component.
